Il prossimo 27 settembre, 2026, a Valmontone, verrà inaugurato un nuovo memoriale dedicato agli eroi della Terza Divisione di Fanteria nella guerra di liberazione Italiana. E’ un grande traguardo, dopo il memoriale al Sacrario Militare Nazionale di Montelungo, in collaborazione con il Ministero della Difesa, dedicato ai caduti delle battaglie del passo di Mignano e quello dedicato a Sylvester Antolak, in collaborazione con il Comune di Cisterna; inaugureremo un memoriale speciale, dedicato a due Medal of Honor.
In Europa, probabilmente solo in due casi sono state date due Medal of Honor nella stessa azione, a Valmontone con gli eroi Pvt. Herbert F. Christian e Pvt. Elden H. Johnson e Norimberga, in Germania, destinatari Pvt. Joseph F. Merrell e 1st Lt. Michael J. Daly.
Il memoriale nasce dalla la collaborazione tra l’associazione Nazionale Bersaglieri sezione di Valmontone, l’amministrazione comunale ed i nostri amici delle cave di travertino di Tivoli che hanno donato tutte e tre le rocce dei nostri memoriali.
Il memoriale a Valmontone ricorda il sacrificio di due Dogface che si sono sacrificati per salvare gli altri compagni. Nella targa, posta sulla roccia abbiamo scritto una frase del Vangelo, scritta da Giovanni, “Non c’è amore più grande di chi dà la vita per i propri amici.” (Gv 15,13)
Volutamente abbiamo voluto sottolineare questo legame forte che si crea tra i soldati in battaglia e che dura tutta la vita. Nessuna enfasi, nessuna esaltazione, ma solo il grande gesto di chi dona la vita per salvare gli altri. La missione di tutti i Dogface in Europa nel ‘43/’44/’45.

On September 27th, 2026, in Valmontone, a new memorial will be inaugurated, dedicated to the heroes of the 3rd Infantry Division who fought in the Italian Liberation War.
This is an important milestone: after the memorial at the National Military Shrine of Montelungo, created in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense and dedicated to the fallen of the battles at Passo di Mignano, and after the memorial dedicated to Sylvester Antolak, in collaboration with the Municipality of Cisterna, we will now inaugurate a special memorial dedicated to two Medal of Honor recipients.
In Europe, there were probably only two cases in which two Medals of Honor were awarded for the same action:
– in Valmontone, to Pvt. Herbert F. Christian and Pvt. Elden H. Johnson;
– in Nuremberg, Germany, to Pvt. Joseph F. Merrell and 1st Lt. Michael J. Daly.
The memorial is the result of the collaboration between the National Bersaglieri Association – Valmontone Section, the municipal administration, and our friends from the travertine quarries of Tivoli, who generously donated all three stones used for our memorials.
The meaning of the memorial
The Valmontone memorial honors the sacrifice of two Dogfaces who gave their lives to save their fellow soldiers.
On the plaque placed on the stone, we chose a verse from the Gospel of John:
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (Jn 15:13)
We intentionally wanted to highlight the profound bond that forms among soldiers in battle—a bond that lasts a lifetime.
No rhetoric, no glorification: only the immense gesture of those who give their lives to save others.
This was the mission of all Dogfaces in Europe in ’43, ’44, and ’45.
